Understanding contrast ratio
The contrast ratio compares the relative luminance of two colors. It ranges from 1:1 (same color) to 21:1 (black on white). WCAG 2.1 requires 4.5:1 for normal text (AA), 3:1 for large text, and 7:1 for AAA level. This calculation is crucial for users with visual impairments.
Fixing accessibility issues
To fix insufficient contrast, adjust the lightness of one of the two colors. Darken the light color or lighten the dark one until you reach 4.5:1. Avoid changing the hue or saturation as this alters visual identity. The suggestions from this tool find the minimum change needed.
